Montreal came into this season with only one direction to go and that was down. They had a great season last year finishing 2nd in the East behind Philadelphia but the offseason was not kind to them.
They saw three big departures for Europe as Djordje Mihailovic joined AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie. He played two seasons for Montreal and had blossomed into a star and was huge for them in creating chances.
On the defensive end, Alistair Johnston also left to join Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and finally, midfielder Ismael Kone, who had a fantastic season and set the club record for transfer fee, left for English side Watford in the 2nd tier Championship.
When you have three players good enough to play in Europe, that tells you a lot about their quality which is going to be next to impossible to replace.
Then there was the unexpected Kei Kamara situation. The club had plans on having him return this season, but he expressed that he was unhappy in preseason, so he was sent off to Chicago. He contributed 16 goals + assists in just one season in Montreal.
Add in a new manager, Hernan Losada and its just one more curveball that makes this season such a crapshoot. Even if Montreal eventually do find some success, new players in new roles with a new manager will take time to figure out.
All of that explains their 0-2 start without scoring a goal as they lost at Miami and Austin. This will be their third straight match to open the season on the road as Canada this time of year is better to avoid. Montreal is averaging 1.1 xG in their first two matches while allowing 2.2 xGA.
Nashville started the season with the New York double, beating NYCFC 2-0 at home in their opener before playing out a 0-0 draw at NYRB.
So thats two matches against two quality sides without conceding a goal. Doesnt bode well for Montreal who are trying to figure themselves out.
Nashville has the reigning Golden Boot winner in Hany Mukhtar and return most of their starting XI from last year sans Dave Romney who was a part of the club since they were an expansion side three seasons ago.
He was a key piece in that defensive unit but so far it seems that they havent missed a beat as they have allowed an average of just 0.50 xGA vs the NY clubs.
Ill back the cohesive defensive unit against a team that is trying to find their identity as they deal with lineup and manager changes.
